NOTES: "A Little More Oil In My Lamp" is also known as "Give Me Oil in My Lamp"
and "Sing Hosanna." The traditional lyrics are sometimes attributed to A. Sevison and J. Paul Williams who arranged the song.
It is listed as a Pentecostal hymn chorus and can be sung as a one part song:
A little more oil in my lamp keeps it burning
A little more oil in my lamp I pray
A little more oil in my lamp keeps it burning
Keeps it burning till the break of day.
The version below taught by Rev. Ruth Gibson has a few additional verses:
A Little More Oil in My Lamp
A little more oil in my lamp to keep it burning,
A little more oil in my lamp, I pray.
A little more oil in my lamp to keep it burning,
Keep it burning through the night and the day.
A little more love in my heart to keep me growing,
A little more love in my heart I pray.
A little more love in my heart to keep me growing,
Keep me growing through the night and the day.
A little more joy in my heart to keep me laughing,
A little more joy in my heart I pray.
A little more joy in my heart to keep me laughing,
Keep me laughing through the night and the day.
A little more peace in the world to keep it turning,
A little more peace in the world I pray.
A little more peace in the world to keep it turning,
Keep it turning through the night and the day.
In many versions a "Sing Hosanna" chorus as a repeated part has been added:
A little more oil in my lamp, keep it burning
A little more oil in my lamp I pray
A little more oil in my lamp, keep it burning
Keep it burning till the break of day
CHORUS: Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna
Sing Hosanna to the King of kings
Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna,
Sing Hosanna to the King
The song seems to be fairly new at least being created in the 1900s. Here's an early version found in the National Urban League publication (dated 1929 in one google search and 1969 in another): Opportunity, Volume 7 - Page 126
They launched into song:
Give me oil in my lamp.
Give me oil in my lamp.
Give me oil in my lamp, I pray;
Keep me singing in the camp
Keep me singing in the camp
Until the break of day
From Mudcat: "A Little More Oil ..." is credited to Patrick Reid and also to Desmond Dekker of Jamaica, but probably earlier. The chorus is often used with other songs:
A little more oil in my lamp keeps it burning
A little more oil in my lamp I pray
A little more oil in my lamop keeps it burning
Keeps it burning to the break of day.
"Give Me Oil in (for) My Lamp" could be the antecedent.
