NOTES: "Bound for the Land of Canaan " or "Canaan" appears in Revival Melodies, or, Songs of Zion‎; Page 11; published in  Boston, Massachusetts in 1842. It is an excellent early call and response type folk-hymn. Another set of lyrics is given under the title, "How Happy Is The Pilgrim's Lot." A third set is found in "A Collection of Sabbath School Hymns," compiled by a Sabbath School Teacher, for the Benefit of the Children of the Confederate States; Raleigh Register Steam-Power Press, 1863.

Other similar versions were printed in the revival hynmal of the mid-1800s. There is a strong likelyhood that Glass, who's is credited with adding the chorus of "Bound In the Promised Land" circa 1853 simply substituted "promised land" for "land of Canaan."

I am bound for the promised land,
I am bound for the promised land;
Oh who will come and go with me?
I am bound for the promised land.

It's also possible that Glass heard this and simply added it to the verses. A relationship with the African-American spiritual "Bound for Canaan Land" and the similar "Sweet Canaan's Happy Land" can be made as both songs are in the call-and-reponse spiritual form.

Bound for the Land of Canaan - "Canaan" by Rev. Elder Jacob Knapp from Revival Melodies, or, Songs of Zion‎; Page 11;  Boston, Massachusetts, 1842.

1. Together let us sweetly live.
I am bound for the land of Canaan;
Together let us sweetly die,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

CHORUS: O Canaan, bright Canaan,
I am bound for the land of Canaan;
O Canaan, it is my happy home,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

2. If you get there before I do,
I am bound for the land of Canaan;
Look out for me I'm coming too,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

3. I have some friends before me gone,
I am bound for the land of Canaan;
And I'm resolved to travel on,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

4. Our songs of praise shall fill the skies,
I am bound for the land of Canaan;
While higher still our joys they rise,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

How Happy Is The Pilgrim's Lot from Rev. Elder Jacob Knapp from Revival Melodies, or, Songs of Zion‎; Page 11;  Boston, Massachusetts, 1842.

1. How happy is the pilgrim's lot,
I am bound for the land of Canaan,
How free from every anxious tho't,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

CHORUS: O Canaan, bright Canaan,
I am bound for the land of Canaan;
O Canaan, it is my happy home,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

2. Nothing on earth I call my own,
I am bound for the land of Canaan,
A stranger to the world unknown,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

3. I trample on the whole delight,
 I am bound for the land of Canaan,
And seek a city out of sight,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

4. There is my house and portion fair,
I am bound for the land of Canaan,
My treasure and my heart are there,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

5. For me my elder brethren stay,
I am bound for the land of Canaan,
And angels beckon me away,
I am bound for the land of Canaan.

6. Then come with me, beloved friend,
I am bound for the land of Canaan;
 The joys-of heaven shall never end,
I am bound for the land of Canaan;
