NOTES: Ralph Stanley's version of "Angel Band" became popular when it was included in the movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou? The song originally titled, "The Land Of Beulah" appeared in William Batchelder Bradbury's Golden Shower of S. S. Melodies (1862 pp. 50-51). To see the original setting go to Michigan State University Libraries - Digital and Multimedia Center - Digital Collections - Hymnals.

The poem by Jefferson Hascall was originally titled "My Latest Sun Is Sinking Fast." The lyric was first set in J. W. Dadmun's tunebook The Melodeon in 1860, to a tune by Dadmun. The song, originally in 4/4 time, is now played in 3/4 or waltz time.

The Emmylou Harris version and others use "snow white wings", rather than snowy wings. It was first recorded in 1927 by Dixie Sacred Singers as "Bear Me Away on Your Snowy Wings." Fiddlin' John Carson also recorded it in 1927.

ANGEL BAND- Jefferson Hascall (Words 1860) & William  Bradbury (Music 1862).

My latest sun is sinking fast,
My race is nearly run;
My strongest trials now are past,
My triumph is begun.

Chorus: O come, angel band,
Come and around me stand;
O bear me away, on your snowy wings,
To my immortal home.

I know I'm near the holy ranks
Of friends and kindred dear,
I brush the dew on Jordan's bank,
The crossing must be near.

(Chorus)

I've almost gained my heav'nly home;
My spirit loudly sings;
The holy ones behold they come!
I hear the noise of wings.

(Chorus)

Oh bear my longing heart to Him;
Who bled and died for me.
Whose blood now cleanses from all sin,
And gives me victory.
