OTHER NAMES: "Lonesome Valley"

SOURCES: Folk Index; Ballad Index;

NOTES: "Bar Of Judgement" better known as "Lonesome Valley" that is a traditional spiritual that comes from Honey in the Rock: The Ruby Pickens Tartt Collection of Religious Folk Songs Page 48 by Olivia Solomon and Jack Solomon.

It's one of the oldest spirituals and has become popular in bluegrass/country circles.

"Nummer Me One" a spiritual from Slave Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands‎ has the "I'm going to the Judgement Bar" as a tag. It's not the same song but it shows that the African-Americans adapted the term.

THE BAR OF JUDGEMENT- The Ruby Pickens Tartt Collection of Religious Folk Songs  Page 26;

Oh, I got to stand at the bar of judgement,
Oh, I got to stand there by myself.
Oh, there's no one else, to stand there for me,
I got to stand there for myself.

My mother's got to stand at the bar of judgement,
My mother's got to stand there by herself.
Oh, there's no one else, to stand there for her,
My Mother's got to stand there for herself.

My father's got to stand at the bar of judgement,
My father's got to stand there by himself.
Oh, there's no one else, to stand there for him,
My father's got to stand there for herself.

Everybody's got to stand at the bar of judgement,
Everybody's got to stand there for themselves.
Oh, there's no one else, to stand there for them,
Everybody's got to stand there for themselves.
