I Don't Like a Nigger
Sandburg (ASb 326) reports something like this directed not at
Negroes but at railroad men. Otherwise I have not found it. The
last four lines, quite incongruously, sound like a fragment of a
spiritual.
'I Don't Like a Nigger.' Contributed by Julian P. Boyd, from James
Tingle, one of his pupils in the school at Alliance, Pamlico county.
I don't like a nigger,
ril be dinged if I do.
Feet's so big
Till he can't wear a shoe.
Head like a hay-stack.
Mouth like a frog's ;
Eats more l)read than
Forty bull-dogs.
Got de glory and honor !
Praise de Jesus, to my dyin' land !^
Got de glory and honor.
To my dyin' land.^
' So the manuscript. Perhaps misheard, or simply miswritten, for
"Lawd."
