B. [Bedroom Window.] From Mrs. Martha Menges of Canton, Ohio. Mrs. Menges learned this song from her mother, Mrs. W. H. Christman, who in turn learned it from a relative in Missouri.
1. "Who is at my bedroom window,
Waking me from my night's rest?"
'Tis I, 'tis I, thine own dear lover,
Has come once more to trouble thee."
2. "Maggie dear, go ask your mother
If you my wedded bride may be;
If she says no, return and tell me,
And I'll no longer trouble thee."
3 "Willie dear, I dare not ask her,
For she will say she needs me here;
So, Willie dear, go court some other,
And whisper softly in her ear."
4. Willie took a shining dagger
And pierced. it through his aching heart;
"Adieu, adieu, adieu, dear Maggie,
you and I will have to part."
5. Maggie took the bloody dagger,
And pierced it through her snow-white breast;
"Adieu, adieu, adieu, dear parents,
Willie and I have gone to rest."
6. Said the parents to one another,
"Oh, how silly we have been,
To cause the death of these two lovers,
Who now lie mouldering 'neath the green."
