Biography: Francis James Child (February 1, 1825- September 11, 1896), was an American scholar and educator who published The English and Scottish Popular Ballads in ten volumes (1882-1898), the last volume was essentially complete, was published after his death by Kittredge. Child modelled his work on Svend Grundtvig's Danmarks gamle Folkeviser, classifying and numbering the ballads and noting different versions, which were placed side by side to aid comparison.

Other Editions: In 1904, a “condensed” version of the Child Ballads was published by Helen Child Sargent and George Lyman Kittredge.  Kittredge did not include ballads 281, 290 and 299 in his “condensed” edition, and that he did not write brief introductions for ballads 131, 256, 279, 297, 298 and 303. For some ballads, Mr. Kittredge added more versions. These are added as an Appendix.

Subsequent editions include:

The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, 5 Volume Set, Dover Publications- 1965 & 2003

The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, 5 Volume Set, Loomis House Press has published a non-facsimile edition, completely re-set and edited to including post-publication corrections and additions. Volume 1 (Ballads 1-53) was released in January 2002, Volume 2 (Ballads 54-113) followed a year later, and the full set now completed with Volume 5 (Ballads 266-305) published in Summer 2011.

Some of the selected ballads included in his 305 seem far reaching and certainly should have been left out- many because 1) the source is not reliable, 2) the ballad may not be traditional (there are not enough examples to prove the ballad traditional) or 3) the ballad is a fragment and not complete enough to tell a story.  That Child included, for example, No. 160: The Knight of Liddesdale, a one stanza fragment, in his The English and Scottish Popular Ballads seems absurd. Another example is No. 295 which recent examinations have shown that the A version is really part of another broadside and the B version is probably a re-creation. No. 230 is also, like No. 160, a fragment and its inclusion questionable.

Since Child's work is based on Svend Grundtvig's, comparing Grundtvig's ballad list may shed some light on Child's selections and omissions. The title includes "popular": The English and Scottish Popular Ballads was taken from Grundtvig and for Child meant- taken from the populous or from the folk (ordinary people). The word popular is misleading. Child never got the chance to write the intended introduction, he died before the last volume was completed.

List of the Child Ballads

This list of the Child Ballads contains all the 305 ballad types in Francis James Child's collection Popular English and Scottish Ballads, collected in the 19th century, colloquially known as the Child Ballads. Child grouped the ballads into rough categories, as follows, and attempted to sort the ballads within each category "according to the probable antiquity of the story".

BOOK I. contains Ballads involving Superstitions of various kinds, — as of Fairies, Elves, Water-spirits, Enchantment, and Ghostly Apparitions; and also some Legends of Popular Heroes.
BOOK II. Tragic Love-ballads.
BOOK III. other Tragic Ballads.
BOOK IV. Love-ballads not Tragic.
BOOK V. Ballads of Robin Hood, his followers, and compeers.
BOOK VI. Ballads of other Outlaws, especially Border Outlaws, of Border Forays, Feuds, &c.
BOOK VII. Historical Ballads, or those relating to public characters or events.
BOOK VIII. Miscellaneous Ballads, also some specimens of the Moral and Scriptural.
BOOK IX. Humorous, Satirical, Burlesque and all pieces overlooked in arranging the earlier volumes.
