22 - BABES IN THE WOOD
Communicated by Miss Frances Sanders, Morgantown, Monongalia County June, 1924. Obtained from Miss Enma Hewitt. Music noted by Miss Sanders.
1 Now ponder well, ye parents dear,
A dismal story you shall hear.
Together they gave up the ghost
And left two babes behind.
2. One was in the wildest mood
Did slay the other there,
In an unfrequented wood
The babes did cry with fear.
4. "Stay here," said he,
ttlrl,l bring you food
And soon be back again."
Hand in hand they took their way
And wandered up and down,
But never more did they survey
llrat man come from the town.
Their little lips with blackberries
Were all besmeared and dyed,
And when the shades of night came on
They sat then down and died (cried).
No funeral dirge for then was played,
But robin redbreast from the fields
Covered then with leaves.
