The refrain, "Oh Lord, won't you come by here," is shared with a song having the same title in Madelyn Sheppard, Eight Selected Spirituals (New York, 1926), pp. 18-20.
From Julian P. Boyd, as collected from Minnie Lee, a pupil of the school at Alliance, Pamlico county; undated, but c. 1927-28. "Negro fragment." The repetition indicated in stanza 1 continues through stanzas 2 and 3.
