Our Goodman (The Old Duke Come Home Again)- Hubbard (UT) 1880 Hubbard A

[From: Ballads and Songs from Utah- Hubbard 1961. The title is generic and could be, "The Old Duke Come Home Again."

15. "OUR GOODMAN"

Hubbard: In Utah we have recorded a fourth version with two unprintable stanzas. It otherwise does not differ greatly from the A text given here.

A. 'The Old Duke Come Home Again.' Sung by Mrs. Salley A. Hubbard of Salt Lake City, Jan. 1, 1917. She learned it from hearing it sung in Willard before 1880.

1. The old duke come home again
As drunk as he could be,
Saying, "Wife, dearest wife,
Come and tell to me,
Whose horse is that horse
Where my horse ought to be?"
"You old fool, you blind fool,
Strange you can never see;
It's nothing but a milk cow
Your mother sent to me."

"Miles I have traveled,
Ten thousand miles or more,
But mane on a milk cow
I've never seen before."

2. The old duke come home again
As drunk as he could be,
Saying, "Wife, dearest wife,
Come and tell to rne
'Whose hat is that hat
Where my hat ought to be."
"You old fool, you blind fool,
Strange you can never see;
It's nothing but a frying pan
That mother sent to me."

"Miles I have traveled,
Ten thousand miles or rnore,
But hat-band on a frying pan
I've never seen before."

3. The old duke come home again
As drunk as he could be,
Saying, "Wife, dearest wife,
Come and tell to me
Whose coat is this coat
Where my coat ought to be?"
"You old fool, you blind fool,
Strange you can never see;
It's nothing but a blanket
That mother sent to me."

"Miles I have traveled,
Ten thousand miles or more,
But sleeves on a blanket
I never seen before."

4. The old duke come home again
As drunk as he could be,
Saying "Wife, dearest wife,
Come and tell to me
What man is that man
Where I had ought to be?"
"You old fool, you blind fool,
Strange you can never see;
It's nothing but a milkmaid
That mother sent to me."

"Miles I have traveled,
Ten thousand miles or more,
But whiskers on a milkmaid
I never saw before."
