"The Three Nights' Experience, or The Three Good Nights"- Sung by Bascom Lamar Lunsford of South Turkey Creek, in 1949. Learned c. 1925 from Sam Hunnicut, who was brought up in Yancy County, N.C.  P ii1

I came home the first night drunk as I could be,
Saw a horse in the stable where my horse ought to be.
"Come here, my little wifie, explain this thing to me,
See a horse in the stable where my horse ought to be."
"You old fool, you blind fool, can't you never see?
Nothing but a milk cow your mammy gave to me."
"Been around the country a thousand miles or more
But a saddle on a milk cow's back I never saw before."

I came home the second night drunk as I could be,
Saw a coat a-hanging on the rack where my coat ought to be.
"Come here, my little wifie, explain this thing to me.
See a coat a-hanging on the rack where my coat ought to be."
"You old fool, you blind fool, can't you never see?
Nothing but a bed-quilt your mammy gave to me."
"I've been around the country a thousand miles or more
But a pocket on a bed-quilt I never saw before."

I came home the third night drunk as I could be,
Saw a head on the pillow where my head ought to be.
"Corne here, my little wifie, explain this thing to me.
See a head on the pillow where my head ought to be."
"You old fool, you blind fool, can't you never see?
It's nothing but a cabbage-head my mammy sent to me."
"I've been around the country a thousand miles or more
But a mustache on a cabbage-head I never saw before."
