[My title. From Chappell's Folk-Songs from Roanoke and the Abermerle]

Home Came The Old Man (Our Goodman) Sung by Henry Pritchard, 1924 from Weeksville, N.C.

Home came the old man,
Home came he,
Home came the old man
As mad as he could be.

He called to his loving wife,
Loving wife, said he,
What's another man's horse doing
Where my horse had ought to be?

You old fool, blind old fool,
And can't you never see?
That's nothing but a milk-cow
My mother sent to me.

I've traveled this wide world o'er,
Miles ten thousand and more,
And I never saw a milk-cow
With a saddle on before.

He called to his loving wife,
"Loving wife," said he,
"What's another man's hat doing
Where my hat had ought to be?"

You old fool, blind old fool,
And can't you never see?
That's nothing but a wash tub
My mother sent to me.

I've traveled this wide world o'er
Miles ten thousand and more,
And I never saw a wash tub
With a brim before.
