Robert Hicks (Hix) Workpage 1600s-1820 Mainly VA-NC

[One of the most popular Hicks names and lines in VA-NC. The Captain Robert line is the most important and most of it is documented.

The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers: Who Came to Plymouth  By Charles Edward Banks

Robert Hicks (Hix) born about 1570 was a fellmonger, of London, residing in Southwark in 1616. He had married before emigration but drew only one lot for himself in the 1623 division. In 1627 his wife Margaret participated in the division. His name does not appear in the Subsidy of 1620 for Southwark but the parish registers of 1620 for St. Saviour and St. George should give some record of his family. The adjoining parish of Bermondsey furnishes the following information about his family relating to the baptisms of his children viz.: Thomas 19 Feb. 1603/4, (bur. April 1604); John 12, Oct. 1605; Sarah 25 Oct. 1607. He probably moved to Southwark after the last date.

1) Captain Robert Hicks. Robert Hicks the Taylor.
Confusion exists between the Surry Co. lines. The original Robert is the emigrant is known as Robert, the taylor. His father? could be born c. 1620 and coming to Virginia c. 1635. He is the Robert who owned land in 1654. It is reported in some charts that he married Winnifred Evans daughter of John Evans.  In most charts Robert, the taylor, is the father of Captain Robert Hicks, who first married Winnifred and then married Frances House. Captain Robert had a son Robert, who died before he did.

[Concerning John Hicks, one of that name (who d. after Sep. 1728 in Surry Co. VA and was prob. born there as well) mar. Rebecca Rives and had 6 ch., including a son Robert who mar. Mary unk. This John Hicks was the son of a Robert Hicks Sr. and Winifred Evans, which couple also had a son whom I call Capt. Robert Hicks, the Indian trader who mar. Frances House and had perhaps 11 children. Although Carol Morrison has said that Robert Sr. and Capt. Robert are the same person who mar. first Winifred Evans and then Francis (House), the website http://www.virginians.com mentions a patent in Charles City Co. VA which identifies Robert Sr. as a tailor, apparently to distinguish him from Capt. Robert who traded with the Indians. The records of this Surry/Brunswick Co. VA family require more study. Where Rebecca Rives is concerned, I have her as the dau. of Timothy Rives b. ca. 1670 probably in Surry Co. VA (mar. Judith unk.), son of William Rives Sr.b. 1636 in England (mar. Elizabeth unk.), son of Timothy Rives d. Sep 1643 in England (mar. Elizabeth unk.) - I believe this line was from http://users.erols.com/someday/rives.html and possibly from the data of J. Rives Childs, author of Reliques of the Rives.

2) Robert, son of John Hicks and Rebecca Rives. . Some charts have his as Captain Roberts son but he not mentioned in the will.

3) [James Rives Childs, ‎Whitmore Morris - 1929:]

Robert Hicks and Elizabeth Rives had issue:

i. William b. 1748
ii. Martha (Patsy) b. 1750
iii. Nathaniel, b. about 1753.
iv. Irvin, b. about 1755 ; d. s. p., before 1782, as he is not included in the Prince George county tax lists for the year 1782, or subsequently. In the chancery proceedings in Greensville county he is referred to as having died without issue before 1785. Irvin Rives received from his father's estate the plantation on which his father lived and also. . .

[Will] Va., March so, 1735, mentioning his wife, Elizabeth, his son, Nathaniel Hicks, and daughters, Elizabeth, Winifred, ..

4) Robert Hicks + Esther Lutin NC

Gordon Faber earlier provided the following, which he said was not necessarily correct or proven:

01. Robert Hicks + Esther Lutin (Found in Chowan County, North Carolina in the early 1700's)
02. Thomas Hicks +
03. Daniel Hicks + Lucy Butler
04. Robert Hicks + Sarah Jordan
05. Sarah Hicks + Armstrong Nichols (that this Sarah is the dau. of number 4 is an error - see below)

In fact, Robert Hicks did marry Esther Luten (the spelling I have chosen to use because it is the one most often found in the Chowan Co. NC records), the dau. of Maj. Thomas Luten, whose will of 16 Feb 1729 Chowan Co. NC mentions his dau. Esther Hicks and his son-in-law Robert Hicks, as well as a number of other children. In the will of this Robert Hicks dated 25 Nov 1733 Chowan Co. NC, Robert Hicks mentions his son Thomas. This information is taken from published will excerpts; if the original wills are still available, the accuracy of the excerpts could be verified.

There are many other land records and misc. public records which mention these people, especially in Chowan Co. NC; a comprehensive analysis of them could paint a much more complete picture of the dates of birth and marriage, places of residence, property owned, and relationships with other families. Perhaps the Dr. Elmer Hicks along with Clark B Hicks of Indianapolis, the gentlemen mentioned by Donna Shufelt, were involved in such an analysis. Hopefully the results of their efforts can be located and shared.

My information says that Thomas Hicks b. ca. 1710 Chowan Co. NC, d. ca. 1775 Wylliesburg, Charlotte Co. VA (the son of Robert Hicks and Esther Luten) married Elizabeth Jordan, the dau. of Charles Jordan. My information also says that Thomas Hicks and Elizabeth Jordan had a son Daniel Hicks b. ca. 1740 near Edenton, Chowan Co. NC, d. ca. 1793 or 1797, who mar. ca. 1764 in Charlotte Co. VA Lucy Butler b. ?, d. ca. 1814, parents unknown. Lucy Butler's middle name is said to be Sage. The above information has been provided to me without proof, so the records of the areas involved must be studied further. It is likely that many of these earlier families were Quakers; it is known that many Jordan families were, and I found last night that Gov. John Archdale of NC, an ancestor of the Pendleton and Connor families, among others, was a Quaker. This opens up another vast collection of records that may be pertinent to our Hicks families, even if our Hicks families were not Quakers!
themselves.

My information says Daniel Hicks and Lucy Butler had a son Robert, specifically Robert V. Hicks b. 1770 Pittsylvania Co. VA, d. 1853 Masseyville, McNairy Co. TN. This Robert V. Hicks mar. 1789 Montgomery Co. NC Sarah Jordan b. 1773, dau. of Francis Jordan. Their daughter Sarah Ann Hicks b. 1 Feb 1812 Montgomery Co. NC, d. 25 Dec. 1889 McNairy Co. TN mar. Harvey Davidson, not Armstrong Nichols. Harvey and Sarah (Jordan) Davidson lived near her parents Robert and Sarah (Jordan) Hicks according to the 1850 census of McNairy Co. TN.

It was not Sarah Ann Hicks but rather Sarah Ellen Hicks b. 1825 d. 1890 who mar. Armstrong L. Nichols. Sarah Ellen Hicks was a dau. of Jacob Hicks and Anna Beaman, Jacob Hicks being a son of Robert V. Hicks and Sarah Jordan. This is the line of Shirley Naughton.

This information is probably all verifiable through various records, but I do not have all the necessary references. Perhaps together we can collect the bits and pieces of substantiating data.

I connect to the above through my 5g-gfather Littleberry 'Berry' Hicks b. ca. 1765 Wylliesburg, Charlotte Co. VA, d. 1839 Aetna, Hickman Co. TN (son of Daniel Hicks and Lucy Butler) who mar. Agnes Jordan, sister of the Sarah Jordan who mar. Robert V. Hicks. I am interested in obtaining proof of the above if anyone has such information.

Sorry about the obvious error in my previous message - I said "Harvey and Sarah (Jordan) Davidson lived near her parents Robert and Sarah (Jordan) Hicks". Sarah (Jordan) Davidson is of course incorrect; the text should have read "Harvey and Sarah (Hicks) Davidson lived near her parents Robert and Sarah (Jordan) Hicks"

[I don't think either of the above John Hicks families have been connected to the Robert Hicks of Edenton and Sandy Point, Chowan Co. NC; this Robert was the precinct registrar of Chowan Co. NC and does appear on many deeds. He married Esther Luten and had two children, Thomas (b. ca. 1710, mar. Elizabeth Jordan; this is my line) and Mary (mar. Daniel Halsey). I placed the marriage of Robert Hicks and Esther Luten about 1686 in Chowan Co. NC and believe that Esther was one of the oldest children of Maj. Thomas Luten (and Mary Currier?). Esther Luten was probably b. ca. 1673 and still alive in 1754. I saw Larry's mention of Africa McGregory d. 1711 as the first wife of this Robert Hicks, but I have no info on her or any children she may have had and have not yet studied this possibility. But note that this Robert Hicks left a will in Chowan Co. NC dated 25 Nov 1733 which was probated January 1734, so I don't believe he died in 1738 or 1739 as stated elsewhere, unless thes!
e will and probate dates have been given incorrectly (the ref. is NC Hist. and Gen. Register, v. I, p. 49; note that an abstract of this will in Boddie's Historical Southern Families v. 5 is partially incorrect). The descendants of this Robert's son Thomas Hicks include the Hicks families of Montgomery Co. NC and Hickman Co. TN, and most of the Hicks families of Fayette Co. IL and Carroll Co. TN (18th district, not those in the 8th district). This line is connected to Jordan and Butler families in several different generations.

William Reeves was recorded as early as February of 1718 in Chowan County, North Carolina where he and his son-in-law Robert Hicks were said to have been traders among the indian tribes in addition to being property owners. Accordingly it is not unreasonable to believe that his first wife, as well as Margaret who is believed to be a second wife, could have been Native American and therefore considered "mixed-race".

I do not think that Samuel or Stephen Hicks are in the direct line from the three brothers William, Robert and Thomas that came from Long Island NY. There are various unrelated Hicks' in Granville Co at that time.

I have some of the people in Eugene Hick's book listed in my database (the plain number before the page numbers for TT Hick's book are the reference numbers for that book). I have a Samuel descended from Jacob

John Poythress(3) (c. 1676-aft. 1724), son of John Poythress(2)

Poythris, John 24 Oct. 1701, Charles City County, 350a. On the North side of Nottoway river on the upper end of Umatora old fields....in Surry. Patents 9, 1695-1706, p. 396.

In 1701, John Poythress, Sr., of Deep Bottom, was credited with transporting Henry Snellgrove to Virginia: "Grant to John Poythress, Sr., of Deep Bottom, 350 acres lying on the north side of the Nottoway River, for the transportation of seven persons; John Lee, Robt. Boreman, Humphry Hix, Henry Snelgrove, Mary Drin, U. Standback, Wm. Lambud. 24, Oct 1701."

According to Dr. Claiborne T. Smith, Jr., these abstracts, from the same deed, refer to John Poythress(3), son of John Poythress(2). These abstracts refer to John Poythress of Deep Bottom. John Poythress'(3) father was still living at this time, but John Poythress(3), according to Dr. Smith, is still referred to as John Poythress, Sr., in this deed. If he is in fact the man referred to as an attorney by William Byrd, in Byrd's diaries, then it should be easier to identify him in subsequent records. He would be John Poythress'(2) oldest son and would be entitled to the benefits as the oldest son, according to that time frame and custom. However, it is noted that his cousin John Poythress(3), son of Francis Poythress(2), is addressed as a Captain also in some of the forthcoming material.

From The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal, Volume XX, No. 2, May 1994, pg. 82.

This manuscript traces several Chickasaw Indian traders who lived along the Roanoke River near Plumtree (Mush) Island, the Occoneechee Neck, and Quankey Creek. Using the names of "Licensed Indian traders," a list of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina traders was created. A partial list includes Robert Long, Charles Hicks, John Brown, William Gilchrist, Abraham Colson, James Anderson, William Kemp, James Moore, Richard Hyde, John Sims, William Williams, and John Pettygrew. One of the first families to live at Sandy Bluff was the Turbevilles. North Carolina records show that between 1713 and 1726, the Turbevilles had lived on the Occoneechee Neck of the Morattuck (Roanoke) River (in present day Northampton County). In May of 1726, William and Walter Turbeville moved to Plumbtree Island (now called Mush Island in Halifax County). In addition to the Turbevilles and Colsons, many other families that had previously lived on the Roanoke River moved to Sandy Bluff. Among th!
em were the Gibsons, Chavis [Chavers], Goins [Goings], and Sweets [Sweat]. According to Gregg, Gideon Gibson was one of the wealthiest men at Sandy Bluff. He was also a "Free Man of Color." So were the Chavis, Goins and Sweat families. All four families were related by marriage. The Goins family had originally come from Virginia before migrating to North and South Carolina. (Goins Island is located at Lake Gaston on the Roanoke River a few miles up river from Hyde Island and Plumbtree Island). Chavis [Chavers], on the other hand, lived on the Quankey Creek, which is below Plumbtree Island. Gideon Gibson had lived near the Occoneechee Neck adjacent to land owned by Arthur Kavanaugh, Ralph Mason, and Richard Turbeville before buying land on Quankey Creek from Robert Long [Lang], a Chickasaw and Cherokee Indian trader. Long also owned land at Elk Marsh and Plumbtree Island. Long had received his land patents at Quankey Creek and Plumbtree Island on 1 March 1719/1720. According !
to Gregg, Gideon's brother, Jordan, went West with Daniel Boone. Benjamin Cutbirth (also known as Calvert/Colbert) was also a member of Daniel Boone's

entourage. Robert Long and Gideon Gibson were not the only woodsmen who lived at Quankey Creek in North Carolina. Joseph Sims and James Moore also lived there. Like the Colsons and Turbevilles of Plumbtree Island, these woodsmen traded with the Chickasaws. During the off-season they often rested at Sandy Bluff before returning to North Carolina. In 1732, Joseph Sims and James Moore witnessed the selling of land between two men from Albermarle County, North Carolina, at Quankey Creek. A third witness was James Logan. William Williams, a former owner mentioned in the above sale, had traded with the Chickasaw Nations since the early 1720s. Peter Jones had accompanied Joseph Colson, Robert Hicks, Major Mumford, and William Byrd II during the survey of "Eden." "On the south side of the James below the mountains the frontier at this time was represented by the Welsh settlement on the Mcherrin; Col.Byrd's improvements on the Roanoke above Sandy Creek, including the three charming i!
slands, Sapponi, Occoneechee and Totero; Major Munford's Quarter near-by; Col.Byrd's Land of Eden on the Dan and Major Mayo's Survey adjoining; Richard and William Kennon's grant on Cub Creek which supplied farmsteads for John Caldwell's Presbyterian Colony... Three years later, on 24 June 1724, Joseph Calvert bought an additional 250 acres from John Gray "on Morratuck River and Plumbtree Island adj. William Green, Near Foltera Fort." The lands bought by Colson/Calvert, and Turbeville on the north side of the Morratuck (Roanoke) River were near an Indian path leading to the courthouse in Brunswick County, Virginia, and to the plantation of Major Robert Mumford [Munford]. Further research revealed that the Turbevilles, Colsons, and Calverts worked for Major Robert Mumford of Brunswick County, Virginia, and with Thomas Whitmell. Major Mumford was a large land speculator and the descendant of an Indian trading family. The Mumfords had traded alongside men like Abraham Wood, Ben!
jamin Harrison, Robert Bolling, William Byrd I, Peter Poythress, and Robert Hicks since the late 1600s. The Turbevilles learned of the Occoneechee Neck on the Roanoke through their association with Arthur Kavanaugh and Major Robert Mumford. By 1712, both Kavanaugh and Mumford were large landowners in Virginia and North Carolina. Kavanaugh began selling his North Carolina patents in 1713 and Mumford acted as his attorney. Thomas Whitmell, the Indian trader, bought six hundred acres from Kavanaugh on the north side of the Morattuck River in 1715. Before moving to North Carolina, the Turbevilles sold land they owned in Prince George County, Virginia, to Peter Mitchell, an Indian trader and land speculator. (Mitchell lived high on the Roanoke River near the Caldwells and James Logan). Anderson was also an Indian trader and land speculator who worked with Mumford. Prior to 1722, Anderson lived with his family on the Occoneechee Neck of the Roanoke River. Before moving to the Roan!
oke River and the Occoneechee, Anderson

had lived in Prince George County, Virginia. Prince George County records reveal that in the 1740 "Rent Roll of all the Lands held in the County," the following names were listed: Jno. Anderson, Lewis Green, Peter Jones, Peter Mitchell, Hubert Gibson, Coll. Bolling, Coll. Harrison, Arthur Kavanaugh, Francis Poythres, Sr., Dan'll Hickdon [Higdon], Coll. Byrd, Rob't. Hix, Robt. Munford, Rich'd. Turberfield, and Wm. Eppes. In 1722, Major Mumford and John Anderson were the first individuals to apply for a patent in present-day Mecklenburg County in Virginia. It was for "2811 acres in the fork of Cock's (now Poplar) Creek" and the Roanoke River. When Richard Turbeville and his family moved to North Carolina, they lived on the Occoneechee with other Chickasaw traders and next to Anderson, Colson, Pace, Mason, Gibson, Lang (Long), and Thomas Whitmell. On 1 March 1720, the Lords Proprietors of North Carolina issued patents to Plumbtree Island and on the south side of Plumbtree Swamp!
abutting the island. These patents went to Thomas Whitmell, William Green, John Cotton, John Geddes, William Reeves, Barnaby Milton, and Robert Lang (Long).
