Council "Old Counce" Harmon
[Council Harmon (1807-1898) married Nancy Tester (1809-1850) around 1830. Sabra Hicks (1785- ) was his mother and Andrew Harmon (1789-1814) was his father. When her husband Andrew died in 1814, Sabra went to live with her father, Big Sammy Hicks. The eight-year-old Council, his younger brothers Goulder and Mathias and his sister Rachel. Big Sammy's son, Little Sammy was fourteen and he learned ballads and tales from his grandfather, Big Sammy Hicks, his uncle Little Sammy and also his aunt Fanny Hicks. When Elizabeth Harmon died, her husband Duke Ward, married Sabra. When Ward moved to Illinois with his four sons, his new wife Sabra took Rachel her youngest and left Council, Goulder, and Mathias with Andrew's sister, Susan Harmon and her Susan's husband, John Mast.
Rebecca Harmon (1842-1929) was Council and Nancy's ninth child. Rebecca married Samuel Hicks III and their children included Ben who was Nathan Hicks' father. Nathan was featured in my grandfather's book, Beech Mountain Folk-Songs and Ballads published in 1932.
Council and Nancy's grandsons, John Benjamin (Ben) Hicks, Andrew Jackson (Andy) Hicks, James Brownlow (Brownlow) Hicks, and Roby Monroe (Roby) Hicks are credited by many as being among the first dulcimer makers and players in Watauga County, NC. My grandfather and now my father has a dulcimer made by Nathan patterned after his father's dulcimer.
Council's seventh daughter Emily (Emoline) married Little Sammy's son, Carroll Hicks. Caroll was one of many Hicks to lose their lives in the Civil War (58th NC infantry Division). Emily then married Ransome Hicks, son of Hiram, whose father was David Hicks (son of Big Sammy). From the marriage of Emily and Ransome came Jane Hicks (Gentry), who provided ballads to Cecil Sharp in 1916-1917 and Jack tales to Carter in the 1920s that were published in the 1925 JOAFL.
This is a hodgepodge of information about Cutliff, Andrew Council and other Harmons- of course this includes spouses and various other relatives.

Cutliffe Harman (Harmon) was a Revolutionary War Soldier. (C-205) He and his wife Susan were the first Harmans in Watauga Co., NC according to "A Family History of Watauga Co." They came from Rowan Co. (now located in Randolph Co.) in 1791 and bought 522 acres in Cove Creek from James Gwynn. His mother was thought to be a Wiley by elder descendents. He, wife Susan and children supposedly lived in a natural rock cave called Shupe's Rockhouse at the mouth of Phillips Branch until his house was built. Cutliff was employed by Daniel Boone to help transport goods and purchase Indian lands. (C-1845)
Susan died several years before her husband who lived to the ripe age of 90. She, he and his second wife, Elizabeth are all buried in Cove Creek at the Cutliff Harmon homeplace. (C-695, 698)

Harmons and Hickses brought stories and songs to Hot Springs
by Rob Neufeld
Beautiful coves are available in Watauga County!
This is what Cutliff Harmon, son of a German immigrant from the Danube River valley, might have heard when he’d gotten a job transporting goods into these mountains in 1790.
Except, he would have heard, “Wilkes County,” because the area around Boone did not get set aside as part of Watauga County until 1849.
Cutliff’s employer, family history relates, had been Daniel Boone, who had established a store in western Virginia and a trading post in the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina.
Cutliff and his young wife, Susan Fouts, whose family had moved with his from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, had set out on their own after the Revolutionary War to settle in Randolph (now Rowan) County.
They had seven children with them when they’d made the trek up the Watauga River to Cove Creek, along the way to what had been, up until 1789, the independent State of Franklin in east Tennessee.
While building his first home there, Cutliff and his family “took shelter beneath a huge rock at the mouth of Phillips Branch known as ‘Shupe's Rockhouse,’” family historian Terry L. Harmon has noted.
“The rockhouse was a beautiful and lovely chamber midway in the face of a cliff 100 feet high,” he reports. “The shelter was entered by a descending stairway of three natural stone steps, and Cove Creek ran west almost to the base of the cliff and then turned directly south.”
The baby of the family at the time of the trip, Andrew Harmon, grew up and married Sabra Hicks, daughter of the Harmons’ neighbor, Samuel Hicks.
When Andy died at age 25—a snagged shoelace had prevented him from getting out of the way of a tree he was felling—Sabra left her two oldest children, Council and Goulder with her in-laws, Susan Harmon and John Mast. Council got to know his grandpa, “Big Sammy,” original transmitter of the Jack Tales in this region.
“One time there was a fine wealthy man lived way out in the forest,” one tale began. “He went out and put him up an ad-ver-tise-ment” for someone to clear his land, though he was really after a giant-killer; and Jack responded.
“Jack says, ‘Give me a tomihawk,” and he went out, climbed up a tree, and waited until a two-headed giant came by.
“What are you doin’ up there?” the giant asked.
“I’m a clearin’ timber,” Jack says.
That began a series of encounters in which Jack squeezed milk out of a rock; pretended to cut open and sew up his belly when he was really cutting a pouch; and threw rocks at two giants who were carrying a log in which he was hiding—all to get the giants to destroy each other so that Jack could bring their severed heads back to his employer.
Big Sammy was also the thrice-great-grandfather of the late, great storyteller Ray Hicks of Beech Mountain, famed for adopting the identity of Jack in his tales.
When Council Harmon’s daughter, Emily, moved with her second husband, Ransom Hicks, to the Warm Springs (now, Hot Springs) area of Madison County (her first husband had died in the Civil War), Council, age 70, went along, entertaining kids and campers with Jack Tales, fiddle-playing, and songs.
“After the war,” Emily testified about the reasons for leaving, “people just got so mean, stealing and everything, we just decided to leave.”
Mars Hill, through which the Harmons and Hickses passed, had a college. Warm Springs had a fancy resort.
One of the children on that long trip was 12-year-old Jane Hicks (late, Gentry), famed source of traditional ballads for the collector, Cecil Sharp, and others. Her former home and boarding house still stands in the center of town.

Council Harmon
Storyteller and musician
Watauga County, NC
[Article from http://www.blueridgeheritage.com]
"'Old Counce' was certainly the kind of man about whom unforgettable tales are told," writes historian Betty Smith. "The tales he told have been perpetuated through several different family lines, but the tales about him have lived on as well." Remembered as a warm and fun-loving man, Council Harmon was one of the first residents of the Beech Mountain area to gain a widespread reputation as a great storyteller. In the twentieth century, Ray Hicks would carry on the tradition, and today the storytelling continues with Orville Hicks. The rich Jack Tale tradition of Beech Mountain would be far less fruitful today, perhaps nonexistent, had it not been for Council Harmon.
The Harmons were one of the first families to settle in the Valle Crucis area of what is now Watauga County. They were Germans who came to America in the 1720s. By the end of the 1700s, the Harmons had settled in Northwest North Carolina, and Council Harmon was born around 1807. He learned his stories from his mother, Sabra Hicks (also spelled Hix) Harmon.
Council Harmon worked as a farmer all of his life, living in various areas around Watauga County, including Big Ridge, Beech Creek, Beech Mountain, and Buckeye. He was very popular in the community, particularly among children. Ballad singer and storyteller Jane Hicks Gentry admired Harmon, who was her grandfather, and there are stories of other children in the community sitting on his lap to listen to stories. Betty Smith notes, "In a family with more than its share of memorable characters, Council Harmon is the one most often mentioned."
Harmon was known for loving good music, flatfoot dancing, entertaining children, and being the best in a community full of storytellers. During a time when families knew how to entertain themselves with music, dancing, and games, Council Harmon was a standout. Without this lively character, many of the stories still told today by Orville Hicks, a descendent, would not be around, and the rich traditions of Beech Mountain might not have been as well documented.

Son of Sabra Hicks and Andrew Harmon. Married Nancy Elizabeth Tester and later Celia Ward. Altogether he had around twenty children. Council is credited for reviving and expounding upon the "Jack Tales." These tales have old English variants, but "Old Counce" updated them and probably created additional stories, as well. Amongst these tales are world-wide familiar tales such as "Jack and the Beanstalk."

When his son Duke Ward II was a young man he moved his family to Caryville, near Cumberland Gap, Tenn.
