Lovely Susan
This seems to be the beginning of a ballad of the returned lover.
There is not enough of it to permit assigning it to any one of the
many stall ballads on that topic.
312 NORTH CAROLINA FOLKLORE
'Lovely Susan.' Reported by the Reverend L. D. Hayman, Pasquotank
county, in 1921-22.
He pulled out his pocket-handkerchief,
He tore it half in two,
Saying, 'One half of this I'll keep myself
And the other I'll give to you.
While the cannon they are roaring
Like thunder [in] the sky
I will think of the lovely Susan
That I left on the other side.'
