Sweet Angia- Chinn (Arkansas) 1963

Sweet Angia- Chinn (mistakenly attributed to Freeman) (Arkansas) 1963

[From the Max Hunter Folk Song Collection online. Hunter, or someone organizing the Collection has this mixed up with another version. This is titled, "Sweet Andrew My Son," in the Ozark Folksong Collection and is sung by Carol Ann Chinn of Siloam Springs, Ark.

Chinn was a student of Parler's who recorded her in August 1958. It was learned from Chinn's grandmother, Mrs. Jennie Carney, of Westville Oklahoma, who got it from their Scottish ancestors, the Palmers. Carol Ann explained that the "spotted eels" were supposed to be rattlesnakes.

Sweet Andrew My Son

Where have you been ridin', sweet Andrew my son?
Where have you been ridin', my own darlin' one?
I've been to my sweetheart's,
Mother, make my bed soon
For I'm sick to my heart
And I want to lay doon.

What had you for supper, sweet Andrew my son?
Spotted eels fried in butter

What leave you to your mother?
The house and the pieces.

What heave you to your brother?
The farm and the land.

What leave you to your sister?
The horse, saddle, and bridle.

What leave you to your sweetheart?
Hellfire and damnation.
