Sharp footnotes: Bars of this rhythm, which occur constantly in this tune, were sung so that each of the first two notes were given rather more than their face value, i. e. the first note was nearly a crotchet, the second nearly a minim. The whole melody was sung quite slowly. Heptatonic. Mixolydian.
