Six King's Daughters- Ellis (TX) pre1932 Dobie B
[From Dobie; Tone the Bell Easy, 1932 version B.
R. Matteson 2014]
Lady Isabel and the Elf Knight,
(Child, No. 4)
B. [Six King's Daughters] This version without a title was contributed by Mrs. A. Ellis, of Austin.
"Hush up, hush up, pretty Polly-O,
Don't tell any tales on me.
Your cage shall be lined with yellow gold beads,
And hung on the ivy tree,
And hung on the ivy tree."
(Repeat last line in each stanza as in the first.)
(Several verses could not be recalled.)
He took her down to the sea. . . .
"Take off, take off your costly robes
And hand them all to me.
Six kings' daughters have I drowned here,
And the seventh one you shall be."
"Oh, turn your back unto me
And your face to the willow tree,
For it would be a scandal and also a shame
For you to see these clothes off of me."
He turned his back unto her
His face to the willow tree.
She locked her arms around his waist
And tripped him into the sea.
"Reach down, reach down your lily-white hands
And help me out of the sea!"
"No; six kings' daughters have you drowned here,
And the king over them you shall be."
