Bold Outlandish Knight- Tanner (ME-MI-WI) c.1889

[Fragment from: Wisconsin Folksong Collection, 1937-1946; The Mills Music Library Digital Collections. Transcriptions and lyrics from the Helene Stratman-Thomas Collection. With music

Title supplied by collectors; only opening stanzas provided. Dan Tanner was born about 1866 and learned this from his mother- either in Maine or Michigan. I've attached a date of c. 1889 when he was twenty-three, although I'm sure he learned it earlier- It was collected in 1941 in Wisconsin when he 75. This is a very old version and one of the few "outlandish knight" texts found in the US or Canada.

The online notes follow.

The Bold Outlandish Knight- sung by Dan Tanner, age 75, 1941

O it was a bold outlandish knight came a wooing unto me;
O bring me down your father's gold, likewise your mother's fee;
And we will ride unto the north and there will married be, O be O be,
And there will married be.
