Little Loney- Godfrey (NC) 1918 Sharp MS

Little Loney- Godfrey (NC) 1918 Sharp MS

[My title. Single stanza with music from Bronson TTCB, II No. 45, 1962. Sharp MSS, 4558.  Godfrey's text is unusual. It's possible that either Sharp or Bronson put this under the wrong MS heading- since the text appears to be from another song. The melody is similar to other NC versions of "Lady Gay."

See Sharp's diary notes below.

  Sharp diary 1918 page 250. Wednesday 4 September 1918 - Marion:
Anyhow I stayed in bed for breakfast this morning and didn’t get up till pretty late. Had an early lunch and rest and then went out to see Mrs Godfrey. There we stayed quite a long time though what we got from her was rather disappointing — she has had her taste spoiled by modern music and owned that she couldn’t "carry a minor tune". I played her piano much to her delight and to that of her children.

[Little Loney] Sung by Mrs. W. L. Godfrey, Marion, N.C., September 4, 1918.

The first very letter that they wrote home
They sealed it up with black
They said that little Loney was gone
To never more come back.
