[C. Lady Gay] Wilkinson MSS., 1935-36, p. 68 (C) Sung by Polly Morris, Pirkey, Va., April 23, 1936.

Once there was a lady gay,
And children she had three;
She sent them away unto the North
To learn their grammaree.

They hadn't been gone but a very short time,
No more than three weeks and a day;
Before cold death came hastening down,
And stole the babes away.
