C. [Gypsy Dardy] The Gypsy Laddie Sung by R. E. Carter, Schuyler, Va., June 11, 1936.
1. It was late one night, landlord rode out
Enquiring for his honey.
She merrily replied to him,
She's gone with the Gypsy Dardy.
Refrain:
Tu ma yaddle, daddle dink, tu ma yaddle daddle dink,
Tu ma ya da dink tum dardy.
Tu ma liddle daddle dink, tu ma yaddle daddle dink,
Tu ma ya da dink tum dardy.
2. He saddled up his milk-white steed;
He rode away quite speedy.
He rode all night till broad daylight,
Till he overtook his sweety.
3. So he rode East, and he rode West,
He rode just to Morty.
There he spied his own true love,
Going with the Gypsy Dardy.
4 Won't you come back with me, my love?
Won't you come back, my honey?
I'll swear by the sword that's buckled by my side
That you'll never lack for money.
5 I won't come back with you, my love;
I won't come back, my honey.
I'd rather have one kiss from the Gypsy's lips
Than all your land and money.
6 She pulled off her little white glove,
'Twas made of Spanish leather,
And she handed down her lily-white hand,
And she bid farewell forever.
7. She wrote me a word that her bed was straw,
And nothing else hardly.
She wrote me a word that her bed was straw,
And not a Gypsy in the county.
8. He wrote her that his bed was feathers;
And for to stay where she was.
He wrote her that his bed was feathers,
And his place was full of Gypsies.
