Black Jack Davie- Littrell (NC) 1925 Lunsford Coll

[My date, a guestimation based on date he collected with Gordon. A MS from the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Collection, Box 71, First Folder. On the MS in right corner is written "on Gordon trip." I assume Gordon is Robert Gordon, collector. Bascom Lamar Lunsford had become one of Gordon's regular, acknowledged song sources by late 1925 and was his contact in Asheville.

Black Jack Davie- Bessie Littrell; Asheville NC c.1925

Little Black Jack Davie came a-riding through the woods,
A whistled soft and lonely;
His voice did tremble to the green, green leaves
For to charm the hearts of the ladies
Charmed the heart of a lady.

"How old are you my pretty fair miss,
How old are you my honey?"
She answered him with a te-ha laugh,
"I'll be sixteen a Sunday,
I'll be sixteen a Sunday."

Come go with me my pretty fair miss,
Come go with me my honey;
I'll take you down to the deep, blue sea
And no more shall you want for money,
And no more shall you want for money.

She put on her big fine gloves,
All made of Spanish leather;
And he put on his old cork boots,
And they both rode off together,
And they both rode off together.

Her husband came home,
Inquiring for his lady;
He got news from the old black cook,
"She's gone with a black Davie,
She's gone with a black Davie."

She saddled up his old grey,
While he put on his derby;
He rode east, he rode west, he rode to the deep blue sea,
And there he spied his lady,
And there he spied his lady.
