NOTES: "Come Over Here" a spiritual by the Mello-aires of Rochester, NY on the Gotham label circa 1952 that is of unknown origin and is known by a variety of names including "Come Over Here Where the Table is Spread" and "At The Table." A variety of versions can be heard on Youtube and on WFMU. I consider it to be a modern spiritual circa 1940 evolving out of the "come over here" choral response.
The Spiritual Singers for Christ is one of the early recorded versions. "Come Over Here, the Table Is Spread" was collected by Smithsonian Folkways from The Starlight Gospel Singers of Perry Co., Alabama in 1954. Richard Smallwood arranged a version titled "Come Over Here Where the Table Is Spread," for the 1985 musical about Mahalia Jackson. Smallwood titled his new version, "At The Table." Compare the Mello-aires below with the Spiritual Singers 1951 version:
Come Over Here- Spiritual Singers for Christ- 1951 http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/9425 Each verse is repeated but the chords and melody change the second time.
