NOTES: "The Coffin To Bind Me Down" is a traditonal spiritual collected from Old Plantation Hymns by William Eleazar Barton 1899
In Old Plantation Hymns by William Eleazar Barton (1899) he describes collecting the spiritual:
Sister Bemaugh and Aunt Dinah sang this over and over while I was writing it down, first for my benefit and then for their own enjoyment.
I have other songs which I learned from these two good old women, some of them used before and others to follow in this paper. The songs obtained from them were unadulterated by book-religion or any modem tinkering. Every quaver, every slur, every syncopation was there, and I took the greatest pains to write them as they gave them. There was one which they called "De Coffin to Bind Me Down." They made a very long song of it by using the verses again and again, the first line in one verse serving as the third in another, and coupled with a different companion. There were only four lines and the refrain, "De coffin to bind me down;" but out of these they made certainly four times four stanzas.
COFFIN TO BIND ME DOWN- Old Plantation Hymns- Barton 1899
1. De coffin, de coffin to bind me down,
De coffin to bind me down!
A folding sheet upon my lips,
De coffin to bind me down!
CHORUS: De coffin to bind me down,
De coffin to bind me down.
A silver spade to dig my grave
De coffin to bind me down.
2. To dust, to dust, to dust we go,
De coffin to bind me down!
A golden chain to let me down,
De coffin to bind me down!
CHORUS: De coffin to bind me down,
De coffin to bind me down!
A folding sheet upon my lips,
De coffin to bind me down!
