NOTES: "Come Over Here" or "Come Over Here, the Table Is Spread" was collected from Elder Richard Bryant (Elder Richard Bryant's Sanctified Singers), a jug band group, on the CD Memphis Sanctified Jug Bands 1928-1930. This is a one part song. A later version was collected by Smithsonian Folkways from The Starlight Gospel Singers of Perry Co., Alabama in 1954. It is a spiritual that is of unknown origin and is known by a variety of names including "Come Over Here Where the Table is Spread" and "At The Table." A variety of versions can be heard on Youtube and on WFMU. I consider it to be a modern spiritual circa 1940 evolving out of the "come over here" choral response.
The Spiritual Singers for Christ is one of the early recorded versions. Richard Smallwood arranged a version titled "Come Over Here Where the Table Is Spread," for the 1985 musical about Mahalia Jackson. Smallwood titled his new version, "At The Table." Compare the Mello-aires below with the Spiritual Singers 1951 version:
