The House Carpenter (An Old English Ballad)- Kincaid (KY) 1933 REC
1. 'I've just come from the salt, salt sea,
All on account of thee.
For I could have married a king's daughter fair,
For she fain would of married me.
2. 'If you could have married a king's daughter fair
I'm think you're much to blame;
For I've lately married a house carpenter,
And I think he's a nice young man.'
3 'If you forsake your house carpenter
And go away along with me,
I'll take you where the grass grows green,
On the banks of deep blue sea.'
4. 'If I forsake my house carpenter
And go away along with you,
And you have nothing to support me on
Oh then what would I do?
5. She dressed herself in fine array,
All from her golden store;
And as she walked the streets all around,
She shone like a glittering star.
6. She called her baby unto her
And gave it kisses three;
Saying, 'Stay at home, my pretty little babe,
And be your father's company.'
7 They had not sailed two weeks,
I'm sure it was not three,
Till this fair maid began for to weep,
And she wept most bitterly.
8 'Are you a-weeping for your house carpenter,
Or for your golden store?
Are you a-weeping for that sweet little babe
That you will never see any more?'
9 'I'm not a-weeping for my house carpenter
Nor for my golden store;
I'm weeping for that sweet little babe
That I never shall see any more.'
