D. "The Girl Who Freed Her Lover" Text secured from the singing of Mrs. Della Causey, Wewahitchka by Rosa Belle Whitfield, Wewahitchka.
As I went down to the old depot
To see the train go by,
I thought I saw my dear little girl
Hang down her head and cry.
The night was dark and stormy,
And no one knew my name;
. . .
. . .
"Wait, Mr. Judge, wait Mr. Judge;
O wait a little while;
I think I saw my dear little girl,
And she's walked for miles and miles.
"Dear girl, have you brought me silver;
Dear girl, have you brought me gold,
Or have you walked these long, long miles
To see me from the hangman's pole."
"Dear boy, I've brought you silver;
Dear boy, I've brought you gold;
But I've not walked these long, long miles
To see you from the hangman's pole."
She took him from the scaffold;
She then untied his hands
While the tears ran down that poor girl's cheeks
She says, "I love that highwayman."
