Ropeman- Farnsworth (OH) 1939 Eddy B
[From Ballads and Songs from Ohio, Eddy, 1939.
R. Matteson 2015]
B. [Ropeman] Procured from Mrs. Cleona Farnsworth, Harrisville, Ohio, by her niece, Miss Velma Farnsworth, Canton, Ohio.
"Ropeman, ropeman, hold the rope,
Oh, hold it for a while,
I think I see my father coming
Many a, many a mile.
"Father, father, have you any gold,
For gold will set me free,
Or have you come to see me hung
Beneath the weeping tree?"
"Oh, no, oh, no, I haven't any gold,
And gold won't set you free,
But I have come to see you hung
Beneath the weeping tree."
Use the same set of stanzas for mother, sister, and brother, then:
"Ropeman, ropeman, hold the rope,
Oh, hold it for a while,
I think I see my sweetheart coming
Many a, many a mile.
"Sweetheart, sweetheart, have you any gold,
For gold will set me free,
Or have you come to see me hung
Beneath the weeping tree?"
"Oh, yes, oh, yes, I have plenty of gold,
And gold will set You free;
I haven't come to see you hung
Beneath the weeping tree."
