The Highwayman- Engles (KY) 1955 Ritchie

[My title. Fragment with music from: Singing Family of the Cumberlands by Jean Ritchie, 1955. Jean reports the two last stanzas (6 and 7) of The Highwayman, as sung by the Engles family. She calls it a modern version.

Possibly based on Charlie Poole's recording of 1926.

[The Highwayman] - sung by the Engles of Viper, KY, pre-1955

Dear boy, I have brought you silver,
Dear boy, I have brought you gold;
And I have not walked these long, long miles
To see you on the hanging pole.

She walked up to the scaffold;
And she untied my hands;
She threw her arms around my neck,
Saying, "I love this highway man."
