Sweet William - Walker (KY) 1917 Sharp MS
[My title. Two stanzas with music from Sharp MS., 4115/. Bronson TTCB, No. 7, 1962.
R. Matteson 2014]
"Mrs. Walker is a coloured lady, the first coloured person who has sung to me. She sang exactly in the same way as the typical mountain woman with perhaps even more 'dwellings' on her notes. She is really more white than black, but is accounted black and, if proof were needed, she takes up laundry which no white woman in these parts would do [sharp's MS notes].
[Sweet William] - Sung by Mrs. Sinda Walker, Hyden, Ky. October 9, 1917.
Sweet William he rose one May morning
And dressed himself in blue
Tell unto me that long, long love,
Thar's betwixt Lady Marget and you.
I know nothing of Lady Marget's love
Though I know she don't love me
But tomorrow morning at eight o'clock
Lady Marget my love shall see.
