Sweet William- Chilsohm (Va) 1916 Sharp G

[My title. Single stanza with music from: English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians; 1917 Sharp/Campbell and 1932 edition, edited by Karpeles. All of Sharp's versions use the generic title, Fair Margaret and Sweet William. Fair Margaret is not the name that is sung, usually it's Lady (Liddy/Lydia) Margaret (Marget/Margret).

Notes from the 1932 edition follow.

G. "Sweet William" Sung by Mr. N. B. CHISHOLM at Woodridge, Va., Sept. 23, 1916
Heptatonic. Mode i, a + b (mixolydian).

When the night was spent and the day coming in
And the Fair Margaret and Sweet William most of them all was a wake,
Sweet William a rose with trouble in his mind
Of the dream that had been last night.
