Sweet William- Cross (AR) 1960 Parler C

[From Ozark Folksong Collection; Reel 356, Item 13. Collected by Parler. This does not sound like Barbara Allen, it really an independent song with an echo based on the end of (I'm guessing) Child 74.

Sweet William- sung by Hi Cross, Lepanto, Ark. and  Mike Thompson, Marked Tree, Ark. January 14, 1960

Sweet William died Fer his true love,
His true love died fer sorr'.
They burred them thar In the old churchyard
In graves both deep an' narr'.

And out of her'n ther' growed a rose,
And out of his'n a briar.
Together they clumb to the old church tower
Till they could clumb no higher.
Together they formed a love-knot there
And the rose wrapped round the briar.
