Sweet William- Sung by Mrs. Rowland Hughes of Herefordshire. Collected in 1905 from Ella Mary Leather. Learned by Hughes about 1875 from an old man who was then about 65 years old.
I wish, I wish but I wish in vain
I wish I was a maid again;
A maid again I never shall be
Till an apple grows on an orange tree.
