There is an Alehouse- Mrs. Asell (Hamp) 1907 Gardiner

[Fragment with music from George Gardiner Manuscript Collection (GG/1/14/849)

There is an Alehouse- sung by Mrs. Asell (b. 1830) of  Portsmouth Workhouse, Hampshire in August, 1907. Collected by G.B. Gardiner, John F. Guyer.

A brisk young sailor courted me,
He stole away my liberty,
He stole my heart with a free goodwill,
With all his faults, I love him still.

There is an alehouse in yonder town,
Where my true lover go and set himself down,
He takes another girl on his knee,
And don't you think it's grief to me?

A grief, a grief, I'll tell you for why,
Because she has more gold than I,
The gold will waste, and the silver will fly,
Then she will not have any more gold than I.
