[My date, none given; my title. From W. Amos Abrams Collection;  Sir Hugh, or, The Jew's Daughter, Variant 1.

R. Matteson 2015]

[The Jew Lady] - sung by Mrs. Frank Goodwin [Madelyn B. Goodwin], b. 1901-? of Apex, Wake County, North Carolina.

It rained a mist, it rained a mist,
It rained all over the ground,
And two little boys came out to play
To toss their ball around, around,
To toss their ball around.

At first they tossed their ball too high
And then they tossed it too low,
And then they tossed it in a Jew lady's yard
Where no one was allowed to go, oh go,
Where no one was allowed to go.

The Jew lady came to the door all dressed,
All dressed in white linen so fine.
"Come in, Come in, my little boys.
You shall have your ball again, again,
You shall have your ball again."

"I can't come in, I can't come in,
Unless my playmate comes too,
For I have often heard of little boys going in,
But they never were known to come out again, again,
But they never were known to come out."

At first she showed them a red rosy apple,
And then she showed them a pin
And then she showed them a charming gold watch,
To entice the little ones in, oh in,
To entice the little ones in.

She took him by his little white hand,
And she led him through the hall,
She led him into the dining room
Where no one could her his call, oh call,
Where no one could her his call.

She placed a napkin over his eyes,
And pinned it with a pin,
And then she took the carving knife,
And carved his little heart in, oh in,
And carved his little heart in.

"Oh spare my life, oh spare my life,
Oh spare my life," he cried.
"For if ever I live to be a grownup man,
My treasures shall be thine, oh thine,
My treasures shall be thine."

Oh place the prayer book at my feet
The Bible at my head,
And when my little playmate calls for me,
Just tell him I am dead, oh dead,
Just tell him I am dead.

Sh placed the prayer book at my feet
The Bible at his head,
And when my little playmate called for him,
She told him that he was dead, oh dead,
And she told him that he was dead.
