"Jewish Lady" - Sung by Mrs. Crockett Ward, Galax, Va., 1941.  Collected by Alan Lomax.

1. It rained a mist, it rained a mist,
It rained all over the town
And two little boys w€ent out to play
To toss the ball around, around,
To toss the ball around.

2. At first they tossed their ball too high,
And then they tossed it too low.
It rolled into a Jewish girl's yard
Where no one was allowed to go, to go,
Where no one was allowed to go.

3. Out came a Jewish lady,
All dressed in white linen so fine.
Come in, little boy, you shall have your ball.
I can't come in, I shan't come in,
Unless my school-mates comes too,
I've heard of little boys comin' in, comin' in,
And never come out any more, any more,
And never come out any more.

4. Ar first she showed him a red rose(y) apple,
Then she showed him a chain,
Then she showed him a diamond gold ring,
To entoice the little one in, O in,
To entoice the little one in.

S. She took him by his little white hand,
She led him in the hall.
She led him in a great high room,
Where no one could hear him call, O call,
Where no one could hear him call.

6. She pinned a napkin over his face,
She pinned it with a pin.
She took her ruby (?) carving-knife
And carved his little heart in, 0 in,
And carved his little heart in.

7. She wrapped him up in a linen white sheet,
As she did them all.
She throwed him in a great deep well
Where it was both deep and cold, O cold,
Where it was both deep and cold.

8. If my school-mates comes and calls for me,
Pray tell them I'm asleep, asleep,
Pray tell them I'm asleep.
