Lord Barney- Morgan (FL) 1964 Bush vol. 1

[From Bush; Folk Songs of Central West Virginia, Vol. 1. Also a nearly identical version from Florida is found in McNeil; Southern Folk Ballads II, 1988. This is the same version collected from Nancy Waldron of Florida in 1986. Morgan sang this at a folk festival in WV in 1964. Apparently they are independent (Waldron learned this from her family) but from the same source.

Lord Barney- Pamela Morgan, 1964

Lord Barney was a brave hunting man,
And a hunting he did ride.
With a gun all on his hunting arm,
And a broad sword by his side.

He rode till he came to his Aunt Jane's gate,
And ding-dong he did ring.
And who was there but his own true love,
To rise up and bid him come in.

"Come in, come in, Lord Barney, O" said she,
'And stay awhile with me.
I will give unto you a bright, shining light,
And a seat beside of me."

"l can, I will, I must come in,
For I have but a moment to stay.
For the girl that I love much better than you
I must see before break of day."

She ta'en Lord Barnie all in her arms,
And her kisses were so sweet.
And she drew from his side a pin-pointed knife
And wounded Lord Barnie so deep.

"Its three long hours till the breaking of day,
It's three long hours," thought she.
Lord Barney has died all in my arms
And it's time you've taken him away.

Some[1] taken him by his golden curly locks,
Some taken him by his feet.
And throw him in Aunt Jane's well
Where the water is cold and deep.

1. Bush has "Come" probably misheard- see 1986 version.
