M. "Lady Margaret." Unknown informant probably of Aberdeenshire about 1908. Collected by Greig.

1. He placed Lady Margaret on a milk-white steed,
Himself on a dapple grey,
And bugled horn all down by his side,
And slowly they both rode away.

2. They rode on, and on they rode,
And all by the light o' the moon,
Until that they came tae yon plain waters,
And there they both lighted down.

3. They lighted down to take a drinks,
In the water that ran so plain,
Till down came streams of his good heart's blood,
And shined in the water so plain.

4. "Hold up, hold up, Lord William," she cried,
"I 'm afraid this night you'll be slain,
"For 'tis only the colour of my red scarlet cloak,
That shines in the water so plain."

5 "Hold up, hold up, Lord William," she says,
Put on  your armour so bright,
Take better care o' yer young true love
For you will be slain this night.

6. Lord William was dead long before midnight,
Lady Margaret lang before day,
Lord William was buried in one corner,
Lady Margaret was laid in the other.

7. Out o' Lady Margaret's grave there grew a red rose,
And out of Lord William's a briar.
And they grew and they grew till they warbled each other,
And made the hearts of young lover's admire.
