War and War Influence- Songs & Ballads from Overton Co.
CHAPTER III- WAR AND WAR INFLUENCE
The poems presented in this chapter deal with war and the influences of war. They fall into three groups: the first shows the soldier who dies, and then portray the grief of his sweetheart or family; the second division shows the soldier, each time from a different viewpoint, first as a lover, and [ ] trying to be happy; the last division shows the results of war.
One fragment, which almost defies classification with either group was found. It has for its setting the Civil War. This poem dictated to the writer from memory, and it follows:
[MUSH-A-DO]
First thing they give me was the old grey horse,
Bridle and saddle for to lay my log across.
Mush-a-do, mush-a-do,
Hey-me-addle, dinkle-ry-o.
The next thing they give me was an old grey coat,
And a jacket and a shirt for to button round my throat.
Mush-a-do, mush-a-do,
Hey-me-addle, dinkle-ry-o.
When they want to milk, they milked in a gourd,
They set it in a corner and covered it with a board.
Mush-a-do, mush-a-do,
Hey-me-addle, dinkle-ry-o.
