(Child, No. 278)

The followjng version is fairly similar to Child A. Several versions and fragments of the song have been found in the United States: See Journal XXX 329; Cox, p. 164.

"The Devil's Song." From the singing of David Rogers, Pictou, Pictou, County; pre1928.

1 It's of a farmer who lived in York,
He had an old wife and he wished her in hell.

Ch,orus
Sing fal the di daddy
Sing fal the di daddy
Sing fal the di daddy
Sing fal the di day

2 The devil came to him when he was at plough,
Saying, "One of your family I must have now."

3 "O take her, O take her with all of my heart,
I hope you two devils you will never part."

4 The devil he took her, put her into a sack;
He off to hell with her onto his back.

5 She saw three tittle devils all dancing in chains,
She off with her cloak to knock out their damn brains.

6 The three little devils to their father did bawl,
"This old devil will murder us all!"

7 The women, they say, are ten times worse than the men,
For when they're in hell they're kicked out again.
