A FEW BALLADS AND SONGS. The following ballads, chanties, and songs were sung by May Folwell Hoisington in Rye, New York. The music was transcribed from the phonograph records by Helen H. Roberts.
Highlands and Lowlands- Heard in 1906 from a Scotchman who had heard it from a kinsman of the Murray family.
1. Ye highlands and ye lowlands,
Oh where ha' ye been?
They have slain the Earl of Moray
And have Laid him on the green.
He was a bra' gallant
And he played at the glove
And the bonny Earl of Moray
He was the queeny's love.
2. Ye highlands and ye lowlands,
Oh where ha' ye been?
They ha' slain the Earl of Moray
And have laid him on the green.
He was a bra' gallant
And he played at the ring
And the bonny Earl of Moray
He might ha' been the king.
3. Oh wae's me for ye, Huntley,
And wherefore did ye sae?
I bade ye him to capture
And forbade ye him to slay.
He was a bra' gallant
And he played at the ring
And the bonny Earl of Moray
He might ha' been the king.
4. Oh lang may his lady
Look fra' the castle doon
Ere the bonny Earl of Moray
Comes sounding through the toon.
