Hanged I Shall Be- G. Edwards (VT) 1933 Flanders G

Hanged I Shall Be- George Edwards (VT) 1933 Flanders G

[Two stanzas from a recording in the Helen Hartness Flanders Ballad Collection at Middlebury College Special Collections & Archives. Classification #: LAP35. Track 07b. Dated 10-09-1933.

The quality of the recording is poor. Only two middle stanzas are sung by the great ballad singer George Edwards of Vermont (not Cazden's George Edwards of New York)- I assume the title comes from a missing ending or from the first published version by Flanders and Brown.

[fragment] Hanged I Shall Be - sung by George Edwards at Burlington (VT). Dated 10-09-1933.

I went up to her mother's house,
About eight o'clock at night
And I asked her if she's walk with me,
A wedding we could 'point.

We walked and talked quite merrily,
Till we came to level ground,
And I pulled a stake from out the fence,
And I knocked this fair girl down.
