NOTES: According to Bertrand Bronson, this is second only to Barbara Allen in popularity among the Child ballads. He notes that the Scottish tunes, though they are few, seem related to "Lady Isabel and the Elf Knight," also among the most popular of the ballads.
Grieg/Keith see this as much the same ballad as Child #74, and Bronson sees similarities in the tunes, but concludes that the melodies, like the texts, justify separating them. - RBW
[Lloyd dates this to no later than the] late 17th century (broadside in reign of Charles II).
[Silber & Silber mis-identify] this as Child 295, which is actually "Brown Girl (I)." - PJS
The broadside Lloyd mentions appears to be mentioned also by Belden; he believes that it is the ancestor of all American versions, plus most recent British versions. But he believes the original was Scottish, and preceded the broadside. - RBW
A number of the Bodleian broadsides have as subtitle "with the downfall of the brown girl."

Local Titles: Fair Eleanor (Ellender, etc., eta), Fair Ellen, Fair Eleanor and the Brown Girl, Fy Ellinore, Lord Thomas, Lord Thomas and Fair Annet, Lord Thomas and Fair  Eleanor, Lord Thomas and Fair Ellen, Lord Thomas and the Brown Girl, Lord Thomas's
Wedding, The Legend of Fair Eleanor and the Brown Girl, The Brown Bride, The Brown Girl, The Three Lovers, The Three True Lovers.

Story Types: A: Lord Thomas, in love with, poor but fair Eleanor, is persuaded to marry the rich brown girl. Dressed in scarlet and green, Eleanor,  who has been personally informed of her misfortune by Lord Thomas,  attends the wedding. She outshines the bride, and the latter stabs her to death in a fit of jealous rage. Lord Thomas then lolls the bride, usually by chopping off her head, and commits suicide.

Examples: Davis (A), SharpK (L), Smith (B).

B: The story is identical to that of Type A, except the youth is advised to marry the brown girl because she is poor and Fair Eleanor rich. In an Iowa  text Lord Thomas' name has become attached to Eleanor's father.

Examples: JJFL, LII, 75; Scarborough (E).

Discussion: Child 73, 74, and 75 are very closely related, and they are frequently found blended. See, for example, Stanza I in the otherwise pure  version of 73 in Henry, Beech MtF-S, 16. Davis, Trd Bid Fa, 191 cites the  distinguishing marks. (See also Child, II, 180.) In 73 there is a triangle with  three violent deaths; in 74, a triangle and two remorseful deaths; in 75 there
is no triangle and two remorseful deaths. All three make use of the rose-briar motif, although 73 uses this theme far less than the other two.

The majority of the American versions of this ballad are related to Child D,  an English text. The Scottish form, with the contamination from 74 and the  remarks by the brown girl on how Annet got her fair complexion, are not  common in any of the more modern versions. Belden, Mo F-S, 37 feels that  those ballads in which Lord Thomas is a bold forester show a close relationship to print. Check the bibliography with respect to Barry, Davis, SharpK,  Shoemaker and The Forget-me-not Songster. This "bold forester" beginning  is the most common form in America and has generally replaced the scene
of the lovers on the hill which is common to both 73 and 74 in Child.

In America, Lord Thomas invariably goes to tell Eleanor of his decision  himself and does not send a messenger as in Child C, E, F, H, and I. The  lovers always consult their parents, never their sisters, as in Child A, B, F,  G, and H. Gardner and Chickering, Bids Sgs So Mich, 37 contains the added  injury of Thomas' seating Annet at his right, while Hudson, F-S Miss, E
has a unique repetition of lines. The names of the heroine may vary all the  way from Eleanor to Fairrellater and Fair Ellington, and the hero is called  Jimmie Randolph in Virginia. Note that Cutting, Adirondack Cnty, 67 mentions "Dunny's Well" running black. See Child E.

For a very detailed discussion of the verbal variations in this song see SFLQ, I, #4, 25 ff. Reed Smith, SC Bids, no treats the history of the song,  and Belden, MLN 9 XXII, 263, reviews the methods by which the counsel is  asked. For a comparison of Percy's text and a South Atlantic States "poor buckra" version see C. E. Means in Outlook, September 1899, 12off. Tolman,
JAFL, XXIX, 154 publishes a parody (many of which exist), and Mabel Minor, PTFLS, X, 144 notes that the song is used as a play-party game in Texas.

Lord Thomas and Fair Annet From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lord Thomas and Fair Annet (Child 73, Roud 4) is an English folk ballad.[1]

 Synopsis
Lord Thomas (or Sweet Willie) is in love with Fair Annet, or Annie, or Elinor, but she has little property. He asks for advice. His father, mother, and brother (or some of them) advise that he should marry the nut-brown maid with a rich dowry. His mother promises to curse him if he marries Annet and bless him if he marries the nut-brown maid. His sister warns her that her dowry may be lost and then he will be stuck with nothing but a hideous bride. Nevertheless, he takes his mother's advice.

Fair Annet dresses as splendidly as she can and goes to the wedding. The nut-brown maid is so jealous that she stabs Annet to death. Lord Thomas stabs both the nut-brown maid and himself to death. A rose grew from Fair Annet's grave, a brier from Lord Thomas's, and they grew together.

Variants
Several Norse variants of this ballad exist, although the man does not reject the woman on advice of his friends in them.[2]

Similarly to this one, in Fair Margaret and Sweet William, the hero rejects the heroine to marry for money; Lord Lovel, containing some similar themes, has the heroine die for lack of hope.[3]

 Adaptations
This ballad was one of 25 traditional works included in Ballads Weird and Wonderful (1912) and illustrated by Vernon Hill (sculptor).

Commentary
The grave plants that grow together are a motif to express true love, also found in many variants of Barbara Allen and of Tristan and Iseult, and in the legend of Baucis and Philemon.

This ballad has no connection with The Nut-Brown Maid, in which a nut-brown maid is the heroine.

Mainly Norfolk: Lord Thomas and Fair Eleanor

[Roud 4; Child 73; Ballad Index C073; trad.]

This ballad was collected by F. J. Child (Child 73, Lord Thomas and Fair Annet) and sung by A. L. Lloyd in 1956 on Volume IV of his and Ewan MacColl's anthology of Child's songs, The English and Scottish Popular Ballads. Lloyd also later included the song in his Penguin Book of English Folk Songs.

Bob Copper recorded Lord Thomas for his 1977 album, Sweet Rose in June: Countryside Songs from the South. Peter Bellamy learned Lord Thomas and Fair Eleanor from the repertoire of the Copper Family. He sang it live at the Cockermouth Folk Club in January 1991. This concert was published on his cassette Songs an' Rummy Conjurin' Tricks.

Martin Carthy sang Lord Thomas and Fair Eleanor on his and Dave Swarbrick's 2006 album Straws in the Wind. He commented in the album's sleeve notes:

Lord Thomas is a twerp whose mother thinks that the sun shines out of his saddle sores. Does a lot of riding does our Thomas, what with all the to-ing and fro-ing between his place, his mother's place, the penniless but very lofty and fragrant (where O where have we heard that word before?) Fair Eleanor in her gaff and his imminent wedding. Seems that Thomas and Eleanor think of the Brown Girl as nothing more than some nouveau riche arriviste unworthy of his attentions—except (as far as he is concerned) for that damnably interesting “rich” part following on from the loathed “nouveau” and preceding the equally contemptible “arriviste” bit. Eleanor's mother, however, is possessed of at least half a brain and is far from blind to this disaster waiting to happen, but even her focused warnings fail to stem her daughter's drive to impale herself on her own spite. The one truly lamented casualty here is the Brown Girl, whose love is thrown back in her face but whose riposte is swift, silent and final. Costs her her own life though. A.L. Lloyd is right when he says that some of the Scots oral versions have small illuminating extras, so while ditching the last two “Rose and Briar” verses which seem to me our of place, I've taken a couple of others from those Scots sets in order to underline the fragrant Eleanor's real malice aforethought. It's from Somerset and Cecil Sharp.

Lyrics

Peter Bellamy sings Lord Thomas and Fair Eleanor

Lord Thomas, he was a bold forester
And the keeper of our lord's deer.
Fair Eleanor, she was a lady gay,
Lord Thomas he loved her so dear.

“So come riddle to me, dear mother,” he said,
“Come riddle it all as one,
Whether I should marry with Fair Eleanor
Or bring the brown girl home.”

“Well, the brown girl she has riches and land,
Fair Eleanor she has none.
And so I charge you do my bidding
And bring the brown girl home.”

So he's rode till he's come to Fair Eleanor's bower
Loudly the bell he did ring.
There was none so ready as Fair Eleanor herself
For to rise and bid him in.

“And what news, what news, Lord Thomas,” she said,
“What news have you brought to me?”
“I have come to invite you to my wedding
And that's sad news for thee.”

“Come riddle to me, dear mother,” she said,
“Come riddle it all as one,
Whether I should go to Lord Thomas's wedding
Or bide with thee at home.”

“Well, many are your friends,” she said,
“But thousands are your foes.
And so I charge you do my bidding
And bide with me at home.”

But she has dressed herself in the shining white,
Her merry men all in green.
And every town that they rode through,
They took her to be some queen.

And she's rode till she's come to Lord Thomas's hall
Loudly the bell she did ring.
There was none so ready as Lord Thomas himself
For to rise and bid her in.

And he's taken her by the lily-white hand,
He's led her through the hall,
He sat her down at his right side
Above the ladies all.

Now the brown girl she had a little pen knife,
It was ground both keen and sharp,
And between the long ribs and the small
 She's pierced Fair Eleanor's heart.

“What ails you, lady?” Lord Thomas said,
“For you look most wondrous wan,
And you used to have the fairest colour
That e'er the sun shone on.”

“Oh are you blind, Lord Thomas?” she said,
“So blind that you cannot see?
For I fear, I fear my own heart's blood
Run trickling to my knee?”

With his sword he cut off the brown girl's head
And he dashed it against the wall.
Then he set the hilt upon the ground
And upon the point he did fall.

“Now come dig my grave,” Lord Thomas said,
”Dig it long, wide, and deep,
And place Fair Eleanor in my arms
And the brown girl at my feet.

Martin Carthy sings Lord Thomas and Fair Eleanor

Lord Thomas, he was a bold forester
And chasener of the King's deer.
Fair Eleanor, she was a fair woman,
Lord Thomas he loved her dear.

“Oh riddle, oh riddle, dear mother,” he cries,
“Oh riddle it both as one,
Whether I'll marry fair Ellen or not
And leave the brown girl alone.”

“Oh, the brown girl she's got houses and land,
Fair Eleanor she's got none.
Therefore I charge thee to my blessing
To bring the brown girl home.”

Lord Thomas, he went to fair Eleanor's tower
And he knocked so loud on the ring.
There was none so ready as Ellen herself
To let Lord Thomas in.

“What news, what news, Lord Thomas,” she cries,
“What news do you bring unto me?”
“Oh, I've come to invite you to my wedding
Beneath the sycamore tree.”

“Oh God forbid, Lord Thomas,” she cries,
“That any such thing should be done.
For I thought to have been the bride myself
And you to have been the groom.”

“Oh riddle, oh riddle, dear mother,” she cries,
“Oh riddle it both as one,
Whether I go to Lord Thomas's wedding
Or better I stay at home.”

“There's a hundred of your friends, dear child,
A hundred of your foes.
Therefore I beg you with all my blessing
To Lord Thomas's wedding don't go.”

But she dressed herself in best attire,
And her merry men all in green.
And every town that she went through,
They took her to be some queen.

Lord Thomas, he took her all by the hand,
And he led her all through the hall,
And he sat her down in the noblest chair,
Among the ladies all.

“Is this your bride, Lord Thomas,” she cries,
“I'm sure she looks wonderful brown.
When you used to have the fairest young lady
That ever the sun shone on.”

“Despise her not,” Lord Thomas, he cries,
“Despise her not unto me.
For more do I love your little finger
Than all of her whole body.”

And he'd a rose all in his hand,
And he's given it kisses three,
And reaching across the brown girl herself,
He laid it on Eleanor's knee.

Oh, the brown girl, she had a little pen-knife,
And it was both long and sharp,
And between the long ribs and the short,
She pierced fair Eleanor's heart.

“Oh, what is the matter?” Lord Thomas, he cries,
“Oh cannot you very well see?
And can you not see my own heart's blood
Come trickling down my knee?”

Lord Thomas's sword is hung by his side
As he walked up and down the hall.
And he took off the brown girl's head from her shoulders
And flung it against the wall.

Oh, he put the handle to the ground
And the sword unto his heart.
No sooner did these three lovers meet,
No sooner did three lovers part.

Oh he put the handle to the ground
And on it he did fall.
And there was an end of these three lovers
Through spite and malice and gall.

Excerpt: About the Commonest British Ballads

by Bertrand H. Bronson
Journal of the International Folk Music Council, Vol. 9 (1957), pp. 22-27

But the contrast between this "wise passiveness" and the violence of the next most popular ballad in the British tradition is extreme. "Lord Thomas and Fair Eleanor" shows no disposition to shy from explosive situation or melodramatic consequence. The delicate beauty of characterisation and phrase of the older Scottish version has given way in the surviving tradition to headlong provocation of the worst that ungovernable passion can wreak upon its victims. The three principals are almost equally responsible for the ensuing tragedy. Fair Eleanor comes to the wedding only to taunt the bride for her lack of beauty; Lord Thomas shamefully humiliates his bride both by word and act; the bride stabs her rival as instinctively as a cornered animal would kill its enemy; Lord Thomas retaliates with such brutal frenzy as to dishonour the corpse by kicking (or throwing) the severed head against the wall; and then with equal precipitancy stabs himself to make an end of all three. These people are Elizabethan in their lack of emotional restraint. Their story, at least, hangs together better than usual in the folk memory. Its essential parts are seldom lost or confused. The breakneck pace of the narrative is slowed only by the two pauses for maternal advice-wrongly followed by Lord Thomas, wrongly disregarded by Fair Eleanor. The rush of event suffers no real interruption; the temporal sequence is unbroken and straightforward. Here again there is little suspense and little surprise. But it is difficult to find any common ground between this narrative and the other. How could the same people be almost equally fond of these
two songs?
