[From The Singing Gatherin' by Jean Thomas and Joseph Leeder; 1939
R. Matteson 2014]
Lord Lovell- Sung by Jilson Setters (KY) in 1932; collected by Jean Thomas when Setters traveled to England and it was sung "at the Inn on the Thames."
1. Lord Lovell he stood at his castle gate
A-combing his milk white steed,
When up came Lady Nancy Bell
A-wishing her lover good speed, good speed,
A-wishing her lover good speed.
Where are you going, Lord Lovell? she said,
Where are you going? said she.
I'm going to ride my milk white steed,
Some foreign countries for to see, to see,
Some foreign countries for to see.
How long will you be gone, Lord Lovell? she said,
How long will you be gone? said she.
In a year or two or two or three,
Then return to my Lady Nancy , Nancy,
Then return to my Lady Nancy.
He had not been gone twelve months and a day,
Strange thoughts rolled through his mind,
That Lady Nancy he would go and see
A- fearing she was dead, was dead,
A- fearing she was dead.
And so he mounted his milk-white steed
And rode to London town,
And there he heard the death bells ring
And the people a-mourning all around, all around,
And the people a-mourning all around.
Who is dead? Lord Lovel he said, he said,
Who is dead? says he, says he.
Miss Nancy Bell from London town,
This is called your Lady Nancy, Nancy,
This is called your Lady Nancy.
