English and other Versions 18. Sir Lionel
Child No. 18, which is titled Sir Lionel after Child's Version A from a Percy manuscript circa 1650, is somewhat rare in England. Gilchrist published a version given to Kidson in 1936 that dates back to the 1800s. Williams published Bold Sir Rylas in 1923 which was collected circa 1914. Another important English version titled Brangywell was collected from Mellor (Dilwyn) in 1905.
The ballad is closely related to Sir Eglamore in structure, theme and melody. It's been pointed out by Bronson that the two ballads' melodies have become mingled over the years.
