NOTES: "Don't Care Wher' Yer Bury My Body" or "Don't Care Where You Bury My Body" is a traditional spiritual from Negro Spiritual From The Far South by A. E. Perkins that appeared in the 1913 JOAFL.
This short spiritual is made up of floating lyrics. The line, Oh, my little soul gonna rise and shine" resembles a line from Mister Rabbit:
Every little soul gonna shine; every little soul gonna shine!
Rise and Shine is also a spiritual, but different. The line, "Don't care where you bury my body," is found in other blues and spirituals:
Me And The Devil Blues- Robert Johnson
You may bury my body down by the highway side
Babe, I don't care where you bury my body when I'm dead and gone
You can bury my body down by the highway side
Lord, my old evil spirit can catch a Grayhound bus and ride.
4. Don't Care Wher' Yer Bury My Body- A. E. Perkins; 1913 JOAFL
Don't care wher' yer bury my body,
Don't care wher' yer bury my body,
Don't care wher' yer bury my body;
Oh, mer little soul gwi' rise and shine,
Oh, mer little soul gwi' rise and shine.
Bury mer body 'n de east of de garden,
Bury mer body 'n de east of de garden,
Bury mer body 'n de east of de garden;
Oh, mer little soul gwi' rise and shine!
Oh, mer little soul gwi' rise and shine!
