An earlier version was collected from African-Americans in Beaufort, South Carolina titled, "Det' Ain't Yuh Got No Shame" and was published in the 1931 The Carolina Low-Country.
George Pullen Jackson published a version in Spiritual Folksongs, No. 158 and a variant may be found in Calhoun Plantation Songs p.21.
