NOTES: The traditional gospel song, "Daniel in the Lion's Den" was recorded by both white and black groups starting in the mid-1920s. "Daniel in de Lion's Den" was recorded in 1926 by the Dixon Brothers for OKeh and the North Carolina Cooper Boys recorded "Daniel in the Den of Lions" in 1927. The black gospel group, Norfolk Jubilee Quartette recorded "Daniel in the Lions' Den" in 1927. Norfolk Jubilee version (below) is different than the Dixon Brothers and Cooper Boys versions which Meade references to the following song, "Who Did," as a source.

Notes: This may actually be two songs; I have a recording by the Brandy Snifters claiming to derive their piece from two 78s, "Daniel in the Den of Lions" by the North Carolina Cooper Boys and "The Whale Did, I Know He Did" by Mustard and Gravy. The verses of this collated version, however, are almost all found in the Folksinger's Wordbook text, though with differences in order. Pending more examples, I'm treating the piece as a unity.
The story of the fish (NOT a whale!) which swallowed Jonah is related in Jonah 2. The Hebrews in the fiery furnace ("Shadrack, Meshak, Abindigo" -- all misspelled, be it noted) are a reference to Daniel 3. The story of Noah and the Ark (actually two stories collated) is in Genesis 6-8. David and Goliath (again, two stories collated) occupy 1 Samuel 17. - RBW
Listening to "Daniel in the Den of Lions," it's clearly the same song as, "Who Did Swallow Jonah?" - PJS
But that still leaves the mystery of "The Whale Did, I Know He Did." - RBW
I'd guess that "The Whale Did" is essentially the same song, with the title changed. - PJS

"Daniel in the Lion's Den" is also a ballad found in 1830 in Camp-Meeting Chorister (see that version: ) and a version was collected in 1916 that came from the mid-1800s (see Brown). Details follow:

In a miscellaneous untitled collection of American broadsides in the Houghton Library of Harvard University there is a broadside of 'Daniel in the Lion's Den.' undated and without indication of printer or publisher. It is in sixteen stanzas and begins, "Among
the Judith captives, one Daniel there was found."
'Daniel in the Lion's Den' appears (without music or indication of authorship) in Peter D. Myers's The Zion Songster: A Collection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Generally Sung at Camp and Prayer Meetings, and in Rez'ii'als of Religion (New York, 1829,
1834, 1844), pp. 304-6 (1844 ed.). The same ballad also appears, with a "Second Part" relating the fate of Daniel's enemies, in The Camp-Meeting Chorister: or, A Collection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs, for the Pious of All Denominations to Be Sung
at Camp Meetings, etc. (Philadelphia. 1852). pp. 173-6. SharpK II p. 273 prints one stanza with music. The Library of Congress Check-List lists two songs with this title, both from South Carolina. Davis FSV 311-12 lists two texts by title.
Between the Zion Songster and the Blades texts (eleven stanzas in each) there are verbal differences in every stanza, twenty-six in all; e.g.: stanza 1, Zion "nations" for Blades "captives," and "They say him" for "He was": stanza 6, "Now when Darius" for
"When King Darius," "soul" for "heart," "The Prince then" for "His Nobles all." These indicate copying from memory. There are similar differences from The Camp-Meeting Chorister text.

Daniel in the Lion's Den: Norfolk Jubilee Quartette- Norman "Crips" Harris, lead singer of the Norfolks is on this side, although most probably not on lead. He joined the Norfolks in summer 1921 when original high tenor Buddy Archer left the group. Harris is the highest voice on this record, while Otto Tutson still sings lead. Tutson left the group in the late 1920s or early 1930s.
