The song is known under many titles (See OTHER NAMES above) known variously as “Drinking Shine,” “God Don't Like It,” and “Scandalous and a Shame” and has been collected by Scarborough, White, and others. The popular black gospel quartet song from the mid- 1920s was adapted by whites and recorded first by Skillet Licker Gid Tanner as "You've Got To Stop Drinking Shine" in 1930 then by Bill and Charlie Monroe in 1936 as "Do You Call That Religion?"
A recent variant that has become popular in African-American churches today is "Scandalize My Name" which was the title Paul Robeson used for the song. The word "brother" is substituted for "religion."
